IV.
Ideology is really imposed, physically, through the distribution of ideas and images, via books, publications, broadcasts and the like. Ideological notions of who we are are really imposed, physically, as well, by the above means and also through rituals within institutions. And when it succeeds, which it mostly does, to a significant degree, it has real consequences for individual psychology, emotion, and action, and for communities. Because this is a real, material imposition, it also meets real resistance–which is very important for us, if we want to augment such resistance.
