We live in a media machine. Screens are all around us, sticking to our eyes and our fingers. I am cybernetically engaged with a screen as I make this page. You are cybernetically engaged with a screen as you read and click. Ideological notions, selections, and misinformation, as well as active “subjectification” as one or another type of subject–the “male,” the “female,” the “democrat,” the “libertarian,” the “gamer,” the “blogger”… flow through this vast media architecture, at us and through us all day long. Yet if we understand how the system works, we can also take a certain distance from it, to return a bit to our senses and figure out where we’re actually at and what we actually could do.
